Would I have to get permission to use a song in our school announcements?

I want to use 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey for a music video I'm making. The video would go through our schools video announcements, and possibly on the web. Do I need to contact SonyBMG to get permission to use it?

umm, well theres diff rules with EVERY school. so just ask the office. they will tell u if u can or cant. its that easy. but it sounds good to me, i dont know why they wouldnt want u to. Good Luck♥
Reply:If you put it on the web, you definitely will need a "performance license" from Sony, because it will be a public distribution of the song.

If you use it just at one school, for one announcement, you probably *should* get a license, but as a practical matter probably don't have to.

Likewise, if it is on the web for only a day or two you probably could avoid getting the license.

You have to find who administers the song rights for that song; it may be Sony, or they may have contracted it out to Harry Fox agency. If you search the database at HarryFox.com/songfile, you will find many songs with that title - thus you need to know who the composer is.

I would suggest you keep the video in the school and not post it to the web.
Reply:No - you are not making money from it. Public access TV uses songs all the time and rebroadcasts over and over again and because it's not making money there is no reason to bother. The web cast you may not want to do though...
