Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull our little ones to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in

a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle to the ground?

Isn't it horrible? I thought the same thing! But, apparently it's a part of American history.
Reply:I change the lyrics, my daughter likes the melody.
Reply:Yah I hate that song I think it's the worst! but ofcourse it's everywhere....the song is more about falling into a coma than sleep..i dunno i dont like it
Reply:lol i have NO idea. have u been watching the simpsons?
Reply:i don't. and that is precisely the reason why (i wouldn't know how to explain if they ask about the song, and they do ask).

... but i hum the tune to them though, IT IS comforting. = )
Reply:v good question! I often used to burst out laughing when i first started singing it to my little girl, now that she is older its a game we play with her in my arms and i pretend to drop her in that part of the song! I switched to hush little baby... because like you I felt strange singing that verse of the song to my newborn!
Reply:I have wondered that too. It just doesn't make sense. My mom changed the words for me and now I sing the same version to my baby.

Mommy loves (baby's name) all the day long

When the day ends she sings her/him this song

When (baby's name) grows to be a big girl/boy

She'll/He'll know mommy loves her/him the best in the world.

Its a much nicer version!!!
Reply:Haha! great question. My husband sings a goofy version where he changes the ending:

Rock-a-bye baby

In the tree top

When the wind blows

The cradle will rock

When the bough breaks

The cradle will fall

And down will come baby

In a parachute and all.

:P
